Britain's largest mosque is rapidly taking shape

One of the most ambitious building plans seen in Merton for decades - the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Bait-ul-Futuh mosque - is rapidly taking shape in London Road, Morden.

What is anticipated as Britain's largest mosque, with a capacity of 3000 and costing £4million, should be ready between March and July next year.

Project director Nasser Khan revealed poor weather conditions had put the constructions had put the construction work behind schedule but builders were now back on track.

He said: "We were about five weeks behind schedule three months ago but it's amazing what happens when you throw money at things. We have clawed back almost all of the lost time."

Mr Khan added that parking and access problems have now been resolved after the association gave Merton Council £40,000 to help widen roads around the site.

The association's liaison group is planning to host an exhibition to help challenge perceptions and misinformation about Islam.

Members will give borough residents more details about what the finished building will look like and what activities it will host.

There is still some discussion about the design of the front of the building which could feature a large dome.

Group secretary Naseer Dean said: "We have had open days in the past and we are looking to hold another, may be in August, and an exhibition somewhere in the borough."

The group is also planning to distribute information about the association to introduce the community and the mosque.
